St John Ambulance
Commercial – 2011
In 2011, DStevens began work on the St John Ambulance Redevelopment in Gisborne.
Passive building performance systems were applied across the building to improve the thermal envelope and internal comfort for the occupants. The external walls of the building were completely re-clad in Sto plaster and cedar shiplap weatherboards. Double-glazed aluminium windows and doors were fitted throughout with a feature timber-glazing system to the western wall of the ground floor training room, opening out towards Bright Street. A warm-roof system was also installed over the existing roof of the two-storey building at the northern end of the development.
In order to maintain business continuity while St John established their temporary accommodation, we developed a robust project delivery methodology and staging plan that maintained access for St John operations staff to the two-storey section of the building at the northern end of the site while demolition works commenced at the southern end. The first stage was isolated, demolished and refurbished to a bespoke architectural specification. Once St John established an operations centre at their temporary accommodation we began refurbishing the existing two-storey section of the development.
The most challenging aspect of the build was maintaining the project was completed on time and within budget. St John had set a deadline for completion and there was little room to move. One challenge the St John Local Area Committee faced while raising funds for the project was the number of other worthy charitable projects taking place at the time – including the East Coast Rescue Helicopter and Christchurch Earthquake Relief. DStevens was mindful of the funding issues and aimed to meet the deadline by carefully managing all site progress and limiting any obstacles that may interrupt work. We kept tight control of all project costs and identified any savings that could be made to keep within the budget. Subsequently, the building was completed on time, to budget, with no compromise made on the high-quality finish and integrity of the building.
The project was awarded Commercial Project of the Year in 2013.
